ServicesStump Grinding

Stump Grinding in Leesburg

We grind old stumps below the soil line, clear the chips the way you prefer and leave the spot level and raked. Your lawn, beds and walkways are protected while we work, and the yard looks finished when we pull away.

When grinding is the right answer for a stump

A stump left after a tree comes down rarely stays harmless. It sends up suckers, catches mower blades and, as it rots, draws termites and carpenter ants closer to your home. Grinding removes the visible stump and the top of the root flare without pulling the whole root ball, so there is far less digging and far less damage to the lawn around it.

We take the stump down several inches below grade, or deeper where you plan to lay sod or set a paver edge. The rest of the roots break down slowly underground. Landscaping Leesburg has been doing this work since 2018, and the part we care about most is how the yard looks once the grinder is gone.

What a stump grinding visit includes

Utility locate before we cut
We arrange an 811 utility locate so buried lines are marked before the grinder touches the soil. Irrigation lines we find or that you point out get flagged too.
Protection around the stump
Grinders throw chips. We set up debris screens toward windows, cars, pool cages and lanais, and lay boards where the machine crosses soft turf.
Grinding below grade
Most stumps go four to six inches below the surface. If the spot is getting sod, a bed or hardscape, we go deeper and chase the larger surface roots.
Your choice of what happens to the grindings
We can leave a tidy pile for you to use as mulch, spread a thin layer in nearby beds or haul it all away. Fresh oak and pine grindings are best kept out of vegetable beds while they age.
Backfill and final raking
Once the chips are cleared, we fill the hole with clean soil, tamp it and rake the surrounding lawn. Our sod installation service can follow if you want the spot to blend in right away.

Signs a stump should come out

  • Suckers keep coming back

Laurel oaks, camphor and some other trees push new shoots from the stump and roots for years. Grinding the root flare stops most of that regrowth.

  • Insects are moving in

A softening stump is food and shelter for termites. If it sits within a short walk of your foundation, it is worth removing.

  • It is in the way of mowing

Low stumps hidden in grass chip blades and force you to trim around them by hand every week.

  • You are planning new work

A patio, bed or fresh sod needs a clear, level base. Stumps left under new work cause settling and soft spots later.

  • A trip hazard where people walk

Stumps near a driveway or along a path catch toes and ankles, especially for kids and older visitors after dark.

What moves the price of stump grinding

Every stump is priced on site after we see it, not from a phone guess. Size matters most, but access and what you want done with the grindings also count. When stump work is one piece of a bigger yard project, you can spread the cost with financing of up to $100,000, choosing a term between 2 and 12 years, and paying it off early carries no penalty.

Diameter and number of stumps

Wider stumps take longer to grind. Several stumps on one visit usually cost less each than separate trips.

Wood type and root spread

Live oak is dense and slow to grind, while palm stumps are fibrous and quicker. Wide surface roots add time if you want them chased out.

Access to the stump

A tight side yard, a fenced backyard or a stump against a wall or slab calls for smaller equipment and more care.

Depth and cleanup choices

Grinding deeper for sod or pavers, hauling every chip away and bringing in fill soil each add to the job.

How the day runs

  1. 1

    Free on-site walkthrough

We look at each stump, measure its diameter, check access through gates and note anything nearby that needs protecting. You get a written estimate before any work is scheduled.

  2. 2

    Locate and set up

Utility marks go down first. On the day, we set screens and boards, and bring a compact grinder through narrow side yards when a gate is the only way in.

  3. 3

    Grind and clear

We work the stump down in passes, check depth with a probe and follow surface roots that would heave the new grade.

  4. 4

    Backfill, rake and blow off

The hole is filled and leveled, the lawn raked, and driveways, walks and lanai floors blown clean so no chips get tracked inside.

Stump grinding questions

Will the grinder tear up my lawn?

There will be a small disturbed patch around the stump itself, which we backfill and rake. We lay boards where the machine crosses turf and keep the grinder off soft or wet ground, so tire marks are minimal. Most lawns recover within a few weeks, faster if sod is laid over the spot.

Do you remove the whole root system?

No. Grinding takes out the stump and the main root flare below grade. The deeper roots stay in place and decay over time, which is far less disruptive to your yard than excavating them.

Can you grind a stump next to my house or driveway?

Usually, yes. We use screens to contain chips and work slowly near slabs, walls and foundations. If a root runs under concrete, we grind to the edge rather than undermine it, and we explain that before we start.

What if a flying chip damages something?

Our screens and careful setup are there so that does not happen. Still, a grinder works close to windows, cars and your neighbors' fences, so it matters who you hire. Landscaping Leesburg is business licensed and fully insured, and we are glad to talk through coverage during the walkthrough.

Can you handle the tree and the stump together?

Yes. Our tree trimming and removal and palm tree pruning and removal crews can take the tree down and we grind the stump on the same project, so you only need one walkthrough.
